Turkey’s Crisis: Is Erdogan Turning the Country into a Dictatorship?

Right now, Turkey is at a critical juncture, and the entire world is taking notice. There are even fake news reports circulating that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has fled the country. However, let me clarify—Erdogan remains firmly in Turkey, and he isn’t going anywhere until he completely reshapes Turkey’s economic and political landscape.
Reports are emerging that Turkey is effectively becoming a dictatorship. Many articles and videos are calling it out, highlighting how Erdogan has tightened his grip on power. Recently, he stated that Turkey will not surrender to the ongoing protests in Ankara, branding them as acts of “street terrorism.”
What is Happening in Turkey?
Mass protests have erupted in Turkey’s capital, Ankara, where millions of people have taken to the streets. These protests are directed against Erdogan’s government, with demonstrators claiming that Turkey is transitioning into an authoritarian regime.
But why now? Why are the people suddenly flooding the streets?
- The Economy is in Shambles
Turkey’s economic downturn has significantly affected people’s lives. Inflation is skyrocketing, and the Turkish currency, the Lira, has collapsed. - Erdogan’s Leadership is Being Questioned
Citizens now feel that Erdogan is incapable of leading the country effectively.
The Decline of the Turkish Lira
Just five years ago, 1 Turkish Lira was worth around 11-12 Indian Rupees. Today, the Lira has fallen so much that 2 Lira equals 1 Indian Rupee. The rapid devaluation has led to a drastic fall in the standard of living for Turkish citizens.
I had predicted this decline years ago. Many critics opposed my views back then, but today, the numbers speak for themselves. If Erdogan remains in power and continues with his economic policies, the Indian Rupee will soon be stronger than the Turkish Lira.
Why are Turkish People Angry?
The biggest reason for the unrest is inflation. Prices of basic necessities have risen so much that savings have become worthless. Imagine an elderly person who worked their entire life, saved money, and then suddenly, their savings became practically useless due to inflation.
Many Turkish families now depend on welfare payments to survive, yet even government assistance isn’t enough. The situation has become so dire that people are receiving donated clothes and essential goods to meet their daily needs.
The Arrest of Istanbul’s Mayor
Recently, Erdogan made a bold move—he jailed the Mayor of Istanbul. Why? Because the mayor had defeated Erdogan’s party in the local elections.
To justify the arrest, Erdogan’s administration accused the mayor of corruption, money laundering, extortion, and even supporting terrorism. It is evident that Erdogan feared political competition and used these charges as a means to eliminate opposition.
The question now is:
Can the protesters free the mayor, or will Erdogan continue to consolidate his power?
With elections scheduled for 2028, many fear that Erdogan will reshape Turkey into a full-fledged dictatorship before that time comes.
Why is the West Silent?
Surprisingly, the U.S. and the European Union have remained silent. Despite days of protests, there has been no official statement from Western countries. This suggests that international
